American Humane® Certified Program

Since 1877, American Humane Association (AHA) has been dedicated to the idea that all animals, including those raised on farms and ranches, are entitled to humane treatment. The American Humane® Certified program signifies third-party, independent verification of ethical and science-based animal welfare practices.

Certification doesn’t happen in a day. The audit is comprehensive, covering 200 separate items including diet, living conditions and natural behaviors. The standards set by American Humane Association are in practice on all Foster Farms chicken ranches in California and the Pacific Northwest.

The exacting standards of American Humane Association were built on the “Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare” created by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, as well as input from internationally recognized animal-science experts, veterinarians and other animal husbandry specialists. At Foster Farms we follow these Five Freedoms by raising our flocks:

  1. Free from hunger and thirst, with plenty of fresh water and a nutritious diet that ensures optimum health and well-being.
  2. Free from discomfort, with an environment that is temperature-controlled and keeps our chickens safe from predators.
  3. Free from pain, injury and disease through preventive medication and rapid diagnosis and treatment.
  4. Free from cages so they can express natural behavior in sufficient space and the company of other chickens.
  5. Free from fear and distress, in conditions that enable them to thrive.

We strive for continuous improvement in our animal welfare program, and we are committed to working with American Humane Association to promote further advances in animal welfare.
